House of the Day: Pierre Koenig's Last Jewel

0

Be still, the hearts of all modernist architecture enthusiasts: Pierre Koenig's last built project, an extraordinary four-bedroom, glass-walled home in Malibu, Calif., has just hit the market.

Priced at a cool $18.495 million, the home was described by Koenig as a "perfect jewel." The architect, whose sleek glass-and-steel creations became "emblems of the progressive values of Postwar suburbia," spent 11 years designing the beach house (his final design before his death in 2004). In typical Koenig fashion, the home is constructed almost entirely from steel, glass and concrete, and features its own drawbridge and an outdoor staircase leading down to the coastline. The home runs on solar power.

Architecture aside, we love the home's quiet location, surrounded by lush greenery and steps away from the ocean. The home also boasts views of mountains and water from almost every angle.

Cory Weiss has the listing.

House of the Day: Cincinnati's Magical 'Mushroom House'

Filed under:

mushroom house

You already knew about New York's incredible "Mushroom House" but it seems like Ohio's got its own that blows New York's right out of the water.

This colorful and quirky one-bedroom, one-bathroom home in Cincinnati looks like it's been plucked straight out of a Tim Burton movie. With a spiraling, neon-orange staircase, curved walls, psychedelic stained glass, circular steel steps and anthropomorphic window shapes, this crazy-beautiful home may be listed for $349,000 (previously $525,000) but its eclectic appeal is priceless. Though the New York "Mushroom House" admittedly looks more like a mushroom, this Pixar-esque home is known by the same name due to its unique siding that perfectly resembles the underside of a mushroom. See for yourself.

%Gallery-154341%
The home was built by architect Terry Brown, who spent over a decade creating the unusual home with 35 of his former students from the University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning. Every inch of the 1,260-square-foot Mushroom House is decked out in either wood, colored glass, shell or ceramics. In fact, it's engulfed in so many different colors, shapes and textures, it's less of a house than it is a work of art.

Amanda Coleman Voss of Robinson Sotheby's International Realty has the listing.

Filed under:

The glorious month of May is right around the corner, which means Cinco de Mayo is just days away! Which for us at AOL Real Estate means getting drunk ... on gorgeous homes like this $6.2 million Mediterranean-style hacienda.

Villa Ascosa, located in Austin, Texas, is built on one of the city's highest hills, offering endless views over Austin's hill country. The villa's rare setting boasts 4.5 acres of land, an assortment of fruit trees and abundant wild greenery. Its architecture is an homage to traditional, earthy beauty and new green technologies. To maximize energy efficiency, for example, the walls were built from 12-inch-thick aerated concrete blocks.

Inside, you'll find sprawling spaces, soaring, wood-beamed ceilings, ornate curved staircases and gorgeous, terracotta-tile floors and mosaic walls. (Check out that wine cellar!)

%Gallery-154261%
The home features five bedrooms, four and a half bathrooms, an in-home theater, wine cellar, and a spectacular outdoor patio overlooking a glistening infinity pool. Heaven!

Brian Langlois of Capital City Sotheby's International Realty has the listing.

House of the Day: Room to Play at NFL Hall of Famer's Mansion

Filed under:

There's no doubt about it, this newly listed mansion is baller. In more ways than one. First off, it's owned by NFL Hall of Famer Willie Roaf (the Kansas City Chiefs and New Orleans Saints offensive tackle was inducted just this year), and it's also an exceptional property in its own right.

Nestled in the hills adjoining Orange and Villa Park, Calif., the colossal home affords miles upon miles of city and nature views. Capitalizing on its elevated location, the home's outdoor entertaining features take al fresco to a new level: We're talking stone-paved covered patios with fire-pits and a built-in grill, and a pool, spa and fountain -- all of which boast incredible vistas over northern Orange County.

%Gallery-153393%
The 6,500-square-foot home also features a two-story grand foyer, a wet bar, stacked stone fireplaces and a huge billiard room. The home is on sale for $2.95 million.

House of the Day: Schoolroom-Turned-Penthouse in Harlem

If going back to school is the last thing you'd ever want to do, it's probably because you haven't yet laid eyes on this incredible school-turned-penthouse. That's right, this impeccably stylish, $975,000 penthouse was once part of New York City's P.S. 90.

Though classes at the old Central Harlem elementary school (built circa 1905) are no longer in session, the conversion that's taken place on the former school's uppermost level -- now the penthouse suite -- is teaching us a lesson or two in style. With European oak floors boasting an exquisite herringbone pattern, nine-foot ceilings and "walls of windows," you could easily mistake this stunning, sunlight-drenched space for a Tribeca loft or an East Village penthouse. And with those luxe bathrooms featuring staggered bond-mosaic walls and Palmira stone baths? We give it an A+.

%Gallery-156075%
If living in a former classroom isn't cool enough for you, the penthouse also comes with a 1,500-square-foot private terrace (bigger than the apartment itself, which stands at 1,392 square feet) that offers majestic Central Park and Manhattan skyline views.

Lucie Holt and Yana Milanova of Citi Habitats have the listing.

House of the Day: Jockey Billy Pearson's La Jolla Place

At AOL Real Estate we love nothing more than a gorgeous home with A-list associations and this one's got beauty and star power to boot!

This newly-listed, $14.9 million mansion in La Jolla, Calif., belonged to the late jockey Billy Pearson, who was credited with over 800 victories in the 1940s and '50s and was close to Hollywood heavyweights like director John Huston and dancer Gene Kelly. The perpetually star-studded home also served as a staging ground for Bing Crosby and fellow actor and singer Burl Ives.

Horseman and his Hollywood posse aside, the 10,000-square-foot home is still outstanding on its own merits. The sprawling, six-bedroom manse boasts ocean views, a home theater, a colossal wine cellar and five courtyards. Plus, it's been designated a historic site and was modeled after Italian opera house "Teatro La Fenice" by the celebrated architect Tom Sheperd.

House of the Day: $14.9 Million Buys You a Home Built for Jesus

0
0

Filed under:

We speak a lot about homes that are "divine" or "heavenly," but this one literally is. Built for Jesus Christ himself on his Second Coming, this exquisite mansion in Riverdale, N.Y., has hit the market for a kingly $14.988 million.

A steal, really, considering it was designed to house the savior of all mankind! And it looks the part, too. The New York Theological Society really pulled out all the stops when they constructed the palatial home in 1928. Dubbed the Chapel Hill Mansion, the 15,000-square-foot estate boasts limestone walls, ceilings adorned in gold and silver leaf, imported French walnut detailing throughout and hand-carved marble fireplaces. Oh, and chandeliers designed by the artisans of The Plaza (the home's listing agent Sean McPeak tells us they spent 10 years working on the mansion before they even began decorating the famed hotel). Plus, marble floors (get this) imported from the Vatican. The Vatican.

%Gallery-155261%
If that still doesn't impress you, then this surely will: The mansion sits on the highest point in all of New York City. Forget the Empire State Building, the Chapel Hill Mansion will get you the best view of the city that one can possibly buy.

And then, there's a slew of other luxury amenities -- a gym, a terrace, a hot tub, even a conservatory!

"The conservatory is probably my favorite part of the house," McPeak tells AOL Real Estate. "Glass walls, lots of plants, aged copper, heated floors. It's wonderful."

Sean McPeak of Prudential Douglas Elliman has the listing.

House of the Day: 'Steel Magnolias' House Hits Market

The house made famous by the 1989 comedy-drama "Steel Magnolias" has just hit the market for $1.175 million. Not too bad, considering that the beautiful abode was once a movie set for the memorable film starring Academy Award-winning actresses Julia Roberts, Sally Field and Shirley MacLaine.

The charming home, located in Natchitoches, La., was built before the Civil War in 1840 and sits along the Cane River. Though it was once the on-screen home of the Eatenton family, it is now being used as a bed-and-breakfast (aptly named "The Steel Magnolia House"). It includes six bedrooms and 6½ bathrooms in its generous 6,000 square feet of living space. Below, see a slideshow of "Steel Magnolia" movie stills juxtaposed with listing photos that show the house today.

%Gallery-156676%
The "Steel Magnolias" house joins a slew of other iconic movie settings that have hit the market, including the "Deep Throat" home in Miami, Fla., the "Home Alone" house in Winnetka, Ill., and the "Hunger Games" town by Hildebran, N.C.

Andy Osborn of Coldwell Banker has the listing.

House of the Day: The 'Real World' House

Even if you're not a fan of MTV's "Real World," you can still happily admire -- from afar -- the gorgeous mansion used for the show's 24th season in New Orleans.

Nestled -- quite literally, as you can see -- in lush, verdant greenery, the stunning traditional looks more fit for an A-list celeb than a group of rowdy 20-somethings. Abundant with historic details, such as crown molding, original mantelpieces and classic, curved staircases, the 8,813-square-foot home is the picture of elegance. And it's now on sale for a $3.3 million.

Though the basic elements of the home haven't changed since MTV filmed there in 2010, it does look like it's been classed up a little after the reign of Ashlee, Preston and McKenzie. Instead of garish colors and wild furniture, the home's decked out with sleek cream- and beige-colored designer pieces. See for yourself.

House of the Day: Claire Danes' $6 Million SoHo Loft

Claire Danes soho home

"Romeo & Juliet" star Claire Danes has just listed her spacious loft, located in New York's celeb-studded SoHo neighborhood, for a cool $5.99 million.

claire danes soho homeThe classic, 3,851-square-foot space features three bedrooms and three bathrooms. The building itself dates back to 1882, but the apartment has been restored with wooden beams and columns -- beautifully blending old-school New York with modern conveniences.

The loft, which is located in the same neighborhood where Danes grew up, offers ample living spaces and direct elevator access. Plus, there's a rotating breakfast bar, which apparently is meant to give Danes extra space in the kitchen -- maybe to rehearse lines for her latest movie or to make homemade marshmallows. By the way, the home also once boasted a swing in the living room. (Oh, how the 1 percent live!)
